Aldi is to roll out new cardboard steak packaging for its entire steak range across all 890 UK stores following a successful trial last year.

The new packaging will be introduced on all 15 of the discounter’s steak products from the start of October and will save approximately 1,100 tonnes of plastic a year.

It follows a trial in the retailer’s stores across parts of Wales, the north west and south east of England last summer, and follows a commitment by Aldi in July to remove two billion single items of plastic by 2025 – halving the volume used in that time.

Aldi said it had already removed 6,000 tonnes of plastic since 2019. The cardboard packaging is recyclable, once the protective film has been removed, and is sourced from sustainably-managed forests.

“Reducing our plastic footprint is a fundamental area of focus for us as a business, and we’re constantly reviewing the products we offer to see where this is possible,” said Aldi UK MD for corporate responsibility Luke Peech.

“It can be challenging to balance tackling food waste with the need to reduce the amount of plastic we use, particularly with fresh meat. A successful trial has shown us that this new packaging enables us to do both.”
